Their Story: Why They're Lacing Up

Connie MacLeod

I am championing the Moncton Lace Up to End Diabetes event for several reasons. The first one is my brother, Matt. Matt received his shocking diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes after collapsing in a park in his twenties.  He didn’t have any of the risk factors nor did he notice any concerning symptoms. He was rushed to the hospital, where they discovered that his pancreas wasn't working properly. If he hadn't received care right away, he would have died.  Thanks to organizations like Diabetes Canada, Matt is still living an active and fulfilling life, with his wife and two sons.

Another reason I am lacing up is to support my best buddy, Heather. She was recently diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.  Her life has changed as she has worked hard to manage her blood sugars while juggling her busy life.

I'm also lacing up for next door neighbour, Zonya.  And my fellow Lions, Darryl and Tanya.  And many of my colleagues at work.

In fact, I think every Canadian loves someone that is affected by Diabetes. With our more sedentary work, the increased prices of groceries, and little-to-no time to make healthy meals or squeeze in time to exercise, these numbers are going to keep growing.  That is why supporting organizations like Diabetes Canada is so important.  Every dollar raised helps to support those affected, provide education & advocacy and help fund research to find a cure!

Please join me for a night to celebrate the resiliency of those affected by diabetes, to raise funds for Diabetes Canada, to be active together, to have a fun and memorable evening!
