Their Story: Why They're Lacing Up

Sandra Genua

I had gestational diabetes with the birth of my daughter. It was a wake up call not only to become more active and eat sensibly, but to include movement and hydration as well as relaxation to embody a whole sense of self. I have walked for Diabetes Canada for 4 years now in memory of my grandma who lived with Type 1 Diabetes (Insulin reliant) and Alzheimer's. I also walk for people living with Type 2 Diabetes who can make a significant change in their diagnosis by making simple lifestyle changes as I have. This increases the likelihood of vitality and energy improvements when it comes to reversing Type 2.

Earl Bales and its neighbouring trails were and still are my go to training grounds. In between local day hikes and camping with family, this is where I trek. It holds memories such as preparing for an epic outback trip to Garibaldi Lake in BC and a more recent hike at the Crack in Killarney, ON. My goal is to encourage everyone to aspire to movement as a key aspect of their daily routine which can gradually be incorporated into their Diabetes management plan.
