Your #LaceUp10k supports education, support services, advocacy and diabetes research that may just lead to the next big medical breakthrough.

New to online fundraising? Don’t sweat it! We’re here to help you every step of the way. Check out these tips to kick-start your efforts:

Lead the pack
It’s all about walking the talk. Show your commitment to the cause by going the distance as a fundraiser.Be sure to: Share your story about why you Lace Up on your fundraising page and add a picture of you or your loved one.

Ask around
Raising funds is ultimately a numbers game like any other. Based on the size of your network, start by asking five or 10 people who you think are likely to donate. Start with anyone else you know who is impacted by diabetes or prediabetes.

Set a goal
Let everyone know what you’re working towards by setting a fundraising goal on your page. This helps supporters see how much they need to donate to get you closer to your target. You will earn your Goal Getter badge when you achieve it!

Cook up something new
Lending a little creativity to your fundraising can give you a huge leg up. Try offering incentives to your supporters who donate, such as moving a kilometre (or more!) in their honour or sharing your favourite healthy recipes.

Fundraise with followers

Fundraising through email and social media is an easy way to get a big boost toward your goal. Even if you’re not very active online, your followers are likely willing to help. Just posting your personal page link and asking people to share it puts you and your cause in front of new people for support.

Here are some examples of posts you can make to update your followers on your virtual #LaceUp10k:

FAQ's

1. How do I participate in Lace Up to End Diabetes?

To participate in Lace Up to End Diabetes,presented by GMS all you need to do to get started is register online. You can review detailed instructions in the Registration below on how to do this. Your first step is to decide how you will be participating: on your own, as the captain of a team, or as the member of an already existing team.

Important dates to remember:

  • Kick-off event: September 1, 2021
  • Live celebration: September 26, 2021

Once you’ve registered, it’s time to start tracking your activity and fundraising online. Since Lace Up to End Diabetes, presented by GMS is a virtual 10k, you do it your way! You choose the activity and you set the pace. Walk, run, ride, or dance your kilometres whether it’s in two hours, two days or two weeks.

2. How do I track my activity?

Join our Lace Up to End Diabetes Club on Strava to start tracking your activity from your phone or wearable fitness technology: https://www.strava.com/clubs/DC-LaceUp. If you do not have a phone or other tracking device, remember that 10 kilometres on average is equal to about 2 hours of physical activity.

1. How do I register for Lace Up? What happens next?

It’s easy to register online today:

  • Click ‘Join’ on the homepage
  • Choose to ‘Start a team’, ‘Join a team’, or ‘On your own’
  • Complete the registration form to access your personal fundraising page and/or team fundraising page

If you are participating with family, it is up to you to decide how you’d wish to join. Our website is designed to enable you to have fundraising page for each family member to fundraise from their own networks, joined together as a ‘Team’. However, some families opt to fundraise together and promote one family page. For support on making the best choice for your family, contact us at laceup@diabetes.ca.

If you are participating with colleagues, we recommend choosing the ‘Start a Team’ option when you join so that everyone involved in your initiative is able to manage their own personal fundraising page.

Once you register, you will receive a welcome email to help you start your movement and your fundraising. As you fundraise, you’ll receive updates about the upcoming event and badges as you achieve new milestones.

2. How do I join a team that already exists?

To join a team that is already registered, you will need to know the Team Name or the Team Captain’s Name to find them. From there, it’s simple:

  • Click ‘Join’ on the homepage
  • Select the ‘Join a Team’ option
  • Seach the Team Name or Team Captain’s Name
  • Click the ‘Join’ button next to the correct search result
  • Complete the registration form to access your personal fundraising page.

3. Is there a registration fee

There is no registration fee to join Lace Up. All participants are encouraged to raise funds online. We cheer on your fundraising success through a variety of badges at different tiers of fundraising ($75, $150, $250, $500, $1,000, and $2,000)

1. How do I fundraise? Is there a fundraising minimum?

Fundraising for Lace Up to End Diabetes, presented by GMS can basically be done from anywhere! There is no fundraising minimum required to participate. We cheer on all of your fundraising success through badges and emails at different milestones throughout your experience.

Once you have completed your online registration from your phone, tablet, or computer, you’ll be logged in to your Participant Centre. This is your hub for online fundraising!

From the Participant Centre you can set-up your personal and/or team page, copy your page link, send emails to family and friends, update your goal and much more. It’s also where you’ll be able to see what badges you’ve earned so far, and what you can do to earn the rest!

2. What will you do with the funds that I raise?

Funds raised through Lace Up to End Diabetes, presented by GMS will support our research, education, and health promotion programs. Here are some examples:

  • By funding the best researchers in Canada who are working to find life-saving breakthroughs and a cure.
  • By reaching out to newly diagnosed people with vital support and the most up-to-date information and tools to help manage their diabetes.
  • By sending children with diabetes to Dose of D-Camps in 2021 devoted to fostering confidence and independence.
  • By advocating on behalf of people with diabetes.
  • By providing health care professionals with the latest information and advancements in diabetes research to help them offer the absolute best care for their patients.

1. How do I make an online donation?

Great question! There are a couple of different ways you can donate. Most of the time you would have received an email that will include a link that takes you to the sender’s fundraising page. When you click on that link, you should be redirected to their page where you see a Donate button. Click ‘Donate’ and complete the form to make your donation.

You may also see a post on social media and the process is the same. Click on the link that’s included in the post, which should take you to your Lacers personal fundraising page. Click ‘Donate’, and complete the form.

If you do not have the link, no problem. Visit our website and click ‘Donate’ in the top navigation. From there you can search for the person or team you wish to donate to you.

2. When will I receive my tax receipt?

All online donors will receive an electronic copy of their official tax receipt to the email address they supplied when completing their donation. Sometimes receipts sneak into junk or spam folders so be sure to check those too. If you have trouble finding your tax receipt please contact laceup@diabetes.ca.
