Brianna was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2011, a day before Halloween.
“I was 13 at the time and remember feeling super off for a couple of weeks. I was super lethargic, wasn't eating, lost a ton of weight and was always thirsty. My mom took me to see my doctor to get some blood work and that night they received a call to rush me to the Children's Hospital. They said that my levels were in the 50's and they were surprised I was still able to play soccer. It was a huge adjustment not only for myself but my family as well. But they were my biggest support system and were the ones that helped me get through it. Since I was pretty competitive in sports, my doctor wanted me to get on an insulin pump right away. A year after I was diagnosed, I got my first pump and have been incredibly grateful for it ever since.”
Even with the use of technology, Brianna still finds it challenging to navigate life and diabetes at the same time. There are so many life factors that play a huge role in her ability to manage her diabetes well. Whenever she feels some consistency and that she’s got a handle on the disease, life naturally throws her a curve ball, putting her right back at square one. She is proud of herself for continuing to push through and knows that whatever comes her way, she will continue to learn and be better because of it.
Brianna is modelling in the Pump Couture Fashion Show because she wants to help raise awareness not only for diabetes, but also for the new technology that comes with it. A lot of people that she meets have no idea what an insulin pump even is.
Help Brianna reach her fundraising goal to send kids living with type 1 diabetes to D-Camps. Although she never attended camps, she knows how important programs that can teach kids how to safely manage their diabetes while being active are.
