Being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes has been a journey that Oliver never anticipated.
“After experiencing prolonged illness and weight loss he was told by multiple walk-in doctors that this was just the flu and to rest. After my symptoms weren’t improving my mom took me to see our family physician who ordered blood work, where they discovered an elevated A1C and sent us straight to children's hospital. As an extremely active, prep-level hockey player in the CSSHL, I never imagined that diabetes was what was causing all these symptoms. We spent the next week at Alberta Children's Hospital learning how to carb count, give insulin shots and how this would quickly become my new normal.”
Being diagnosed with diabetes was one of the most difficult times for his family, they had no idea what this would look like. They were scared and unsure what this would mean for his future, which he has been working so hard for.
However, with the help of his friends and family, he overcame many of life’s hurdles and is an avid hockey player, in spite of the challenges that he still faces since being diagnosed.
Oliver is modelling in the Pump Couture Fashion Show to show the world that diabetes should not stop us from reaching our full potential and to continue to chase our dreams.
Help Oliver reach his fundraising goal to send kids living with type 1 diabetes to D-Camps. Although he never attended camps, he believes it would have been an empowering experience if he had.
