Mason was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was 10 years old. This came as a surprise to him and his family as they had no history of diabetes. Even at such a young age, he felt like it was a huge burden.
“I think something people underestimate with diabetes is the time involved in managing it. So many times, I just want to hang with my friends, and we need to stop what we're doing so I can treat a low or bolus for a high. I hate having to sit out when playing sports if my blood sugar is not cooperating.”
Mason has attended D-Camps for 2 summers and will be heading back this summer.
“The best thing about D-Camps is the friends I make there. I don't have to explain myself to anyone when I am there - everyone just "gets it". There is a group of us who keep in touch all year and we're planning to go together again! I can't wait!”
Mason is excited to model at the Pump Couture Fashion Show because he thought it would be a fun experience and an opportunity to raise awareness.
“I am proud of the awareness I have been able to raise. I have spoken at a number of events and I feel like I am making a difference for the T1D community by sharing more about my story, I hope that it helps other kids like me who are trying to manage their diabetes.”
Mason and his family have been advocates in the community, involved in multiple fundraisers to help improve the quality of life for people living with diabetes. They know firsthand the impact and community that D-Camps can provide for children so are excited to be able to continue to raise money to ensure that all kids with diabetes can enjoy this lifechanging experience.
Please show your support by helping Mason reach his fundraising to send more kids to D-Camps!
