Matthew was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 38. Initially diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, his wife urged him to get an antibody test since their daughter had been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as a baby. This led to his correct diagnosis of type 1 diabetes. Although this diagnosis has added to his mental load, his family has been incredibly supportive.
Matthew enjoys spending time with his family, reading philosophy and history, watching movies and TV shows, listening to music, and posting on Instagram. Balancing his roles as a father, husband, and University Professor while managing his diabetes has been challenging. Regular exercise, maintaining a healthy diet, and taking care of his mental health are constant tasks.
He wants people to understand how much diabetes impacts his daily mental load. Matthew advises others to take time for themselves to decompress and give their minds time to rest. He participates in the Pump Couture Fashion Show to raise awareness and be a role model for his daughter, Lilah, who also has Type 1 Diabetes. He also admits he wants to impress his wife.
Matthew is proud of his academic career, but his family is his greatest success. Years before his diagnosis, he proposed to his beautiful wife on the Seine in Paris. He would like to go back to Europe but knows it will require a lot of planning to maintain control of his blood sugar while being very active. He also hopes to visit Tel Aviv, Israel, and Japan again.
Matthew wants to show that diabetes won’t hold him back and hopes to inspire others. Please show your support by helping Matthew reach his fundraising goal to send more kids to D-Camps! Share this page and check back often for fundraising and event updates.
