Maeve was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes on January 28, 2019, at the age of 5. Fortunately, she did not get very sick before her diagnosis, as her mom tested her blood sugar at home. Maeve feels she had to grow up faster than her friends just to survive. Despite the challenges, she did not stop doing any of the activities she loved before her diagnosis. Her family lost a lot of sleep, and she received more attention than her older siblings for a while.
Maeve enjoys being a hockey goalie, playing soccer, and doing crafts. One of the biggest challenges she faces is people not understanding how diabetes affects her life and sometimes not being open to learning about it. As an AA hockey goalie, treating a low blood sugar during a game is difficult because referees often do not understand or have patience for her needing a break to have sugar. A special moment for Maeve was when Max Domi gave her his hockey stick at an NHL game in Winnipeg.
Maeve's diabetes device allows her to have more freedom because her mom and dad can see her blood sugar levels and text her if she needs to have sugar or take insulin.
Maeve advises others not to give up, as diabetes can be very frustrating. One hard day does not mean all days will be hard. She wants to raise diabetes awareness; help fundraise and get more involved in the diabetes community. Maeve has attended Diabetes Camp for three years and plans to continue going until she is too old. Camp gives her the chance to be with other kids who understand what she goes through and has given her more confidence in managing her diabetes.
Maeve is determined to live her life to the fullest and will not stop doing what she loves despite the highs and lows of diabetes. She dreams of becoming a PWHL goalie or a sports commentator. Maeve would love to take a trip to Toronto to watch Max Domi play hockey and meet him in person.
Maeve is modeling in the Pump Couture Fashion Show to raise awareness and funds for D-Camps. She wants to show that diabetes won’t hold her back and hopes to inspire others. Please show your support by helping Maeve reach her fundraising goal to send more kids to D-Camps! Share this page and check back often for fundraising and event updates.
