Ellazara was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 6. Fortunately, having a father with type 1 diabetes meant she was somewhat familiar with the condition. However, living with diabetes still presents its own unique challenges. One of the difficulties she faces is that her pump limits her clothing choices. Finding rompers and dresses that look good with a pump can be tough, and it made ballet awkward with a leotard.
Ellazara often hears, "You look too healthy to have diabetes," which highlights a common misconception. She wishes people understood that there are two very different types of diabetes: type 1, which is autoimmune and cannot be cured or caused by lifestyle, and type 2, which is influenced by lifestyle factors.
Wearing a device has made managing diabetes much easier for Ellazara. It allows her to bolus and eat whenever she wants, quickly correct her blood sugar levels, and monitor her sugar more easily. Despite these benefits, the device can make certain activities, like running or playing field hockey, difficult, and the clip often breaks.
To someone newly diagnosed, Ellazara would say that while it may seem scary at first, you will soon become so used to it that it will almost feel like diabetes isn't there. She wants to model in the Pump Couture Fashion Show because she thinks it would be fun and an amazing new experience.
Ellazara has attended D-Camps for three years, and each time has been incredible. She believes this program is important because it helps kids learn that they are not alone in managing diabetes and that they have a community of people who understand what they are going through.
Please show your support by helping Ellazara reach her fundraising goal to send more kids to D-Camps!
