Claire was diagnosed in the fall of 2024. It was a big surprise, but she had been feeling sick for a while, so we were happy to figure out what had been going on. It's been a big learning curve for us, but luckily Claire's grandpa, who also has type 1 diabetes, flew out from Vancouver to help her for the first weekend after her diagnosis.
Claire says one of the biggest challenges is getting used to giving herself shots every day and not getting to eat the same treats as her siblings and friends. Despite these challenges, Claire loves doing gymnastics and can do a front handspring, a back handspring, an aerial, and a 10-second handstand. She believes that people living with diabetes can do anything that everyone else can; you just have to work hard.
Claire likes knowing what her blood sugar is always, so she's happy to wear a CGM. It doesn't hurt too much when you put it in your body. However, she finds it challenging to keep it on in the swimming pool and hopes it doesn't come off. She also doesn't like when it says, 'sensor error'.
Claire wants someone who is newly diagnosed with diabetes to know that it'shard at first, but it gets easier. You're not alone. You got this. Claire also wants to raise awareness about diabetes and help support D-Camps because she loves going to sleep-away camp herself.
Please show your support by helping Claire reach her fundraising goal to send more kids to D-Camps! Share this page and check back often for fundraising and event updates.
