I was completely shocked when I was told I had diabetes at a regular check up appointment with my doctor almost 8 years ago now. And honestly, my first reaction was one of deep shame. In fact, for quite some time I only told my husband about my diagnosis.
Somehow, I felt that I had done something wrong - that getting diabetes was my fault. Over time I have learned that there are many factors that contribute to a diabetes diagnosis, and that I was not alone in feeling the shame and stigma I experienced. I also learned that we need to change the conversation on this disease so that those negative feelings don't get in the way of seeking support.
Today, as the CEO of Diabetes Canada, I have the privilege of leading an organization with a vision to create a world free of the effects of diabetes. And that includes the emotional and social effects of diabetes, like shame and stigma. I am deeply committed to changing the conversation around diabetes here in Canada.
And I'm asking for your help to do just that. I've agreed to be a model in an upcoming fashion show for Diabetes Canada. Yep, you read that right - me a model! For all those you know me, this is WAY OUT of my comfort zone. So yes, I will walk down a runway wearing some "high fashion" but I'll also be doing it while showing off my wearable diabetes technology. In fact, on June 10th, I'll be parading down the catwalk with almost 25 other "models" who are fellow people living with diabetes of all ages, genders and stages. Together, we'll be proudly displaying our monitors and pumps and spreading a message of positivity and self-acceptance.
I have set an ambitious goal of $15,000! For those of you who know me well, walking a runway in high fashion is NOT my comfort zone, but knowing that you'll support me while doing this will ease the pain! Thanks in advance for your generous support.
