Robbie was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2011 at the age of 25. The diagnosis came during a period of immense change for him, as he had just finished his schooling and training for his career. Throughout the summer leading up to his diagnosis, Robbie experienced various health and wellness changes in his body. Fortunately, he was able to get his diagnosis and begin his journey of education and adaptation to a healthier, more thoughtful, and conscientious lifestyle.
Managing diabetes in his late 20s and 30s has required rigorous discipline, especially when balancing a busy, chaotic, and unpredictable career, along with being a father to young kids who are also busy, chaotic, and unpredictable. Successful management of diabetes demands a focus on diet, exercise, sugar monitoring, and adjustments. Robbie has found that people with diabetes generally don't mind talking about their experiences. Once comfortable with it, there is nothing to be embarrassed about, and sharing insights and stories about life with diabetes can be quite enjoyable.
The ability to actively monitor his blood sugar levels on his phone and quickly check them has made managing diabetes incredibly easy and comfortable for Robbie. The convenience of checking his levels whenever and wherever he needs to has been a significant advancement in his diabetes management. Robbie emphasizes the importance of staying strong, focused, and disciplined. With the tools and technology available today, managing diabetes can be seamless and comfortable. Understanding how his body feels during highs and lows, how it reacts to foods and exercise, and how to use the technology has made managing diabetes second nature for him.
Robbie is happy to participate in the Pump Couture Fashion Show to promote diabetes awareness, foster a strong community for youth with diabetes, and support the great work of organizations assisting those with diabetes. His biggest success is not letting diabetes get in the way of being an active, involved, and energetic father. Managing diabetes has not detracted from or diminished his ability to be a present father and a good partner to his wife.
