Natalie was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes just two days before her 6th birthday. This diagnosis turned her family's world upside down, but they are managing it better every day. Natalie is a champ, which makes the process easier for everyone.
Natalie loves to color and play with her stuffed animals and dolls. One of the biggest challenges she faces is keeping her blood glucose levels in range consistently. Despite this, she is a really fast runner and enjoys being active.
Natalie wants people to know that diabetes is not a disease caused by eating habits or something you did wrong. Being able to monitor her blood glucose levels at all times gives her and her family peace of mind during activities, at school, and at night. It's a big stress reliever, although it sometimes gets in the way, as she always needs to have a phone nearby.
Natalie advises others that as terrible as diabetes feels right now, it gets better. It will always be a challenge and feel unfair, but it does get easier to deal with. Technology plays a big part in making management easier.
Natalie is excited to raise awareness and thinks participating in the Pump Couture Fashion Show sounds exciting. She hasn't attended a diabetes camp yet but looks forward to it.
One of Natalie's proudest achievements is doing her own finger pokes. She dreams of becoming an endocrinologist or a scientist to cure diabetes.
Last year, Natalie's family traveled to Disney World. It was challenging to find foods with identified carb counts, and the long lineups were tough. However, Disney has a special fast pass for people living with diabetes, which helped a lot.
