Carli was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 31, making her a late bloomer in the diabetes community. With no prior history of diabetes in her family, the diagnosis came as a shock to everyone. Carli enjoyed 30 glorious years of guilt-free pizza and pop before everything changed suddenly.
One of the biggest challenges Carli faces is the feeling of isolation and loneliness in managing her diabetes. Many people don't realize that she often experiences burnout from the constant effort required to manage her condition. Despite this, Carli decided early on that she wouldn't let diabetes hold her back. She still finds it difficult to be vulnerable about the energy and effort living with diabetes takes, but she wishes people understood that it's not just about what you eat—literally everything impacts blood sugar levels.
Carli's diabetes devices help her live a normal life, although she finds the beeping of the devices challenging. Her message to someone newly diagnosed is, "You got this! Don’t let the disease define you and know that perfection is not possible or an expectation."
Carli is modeling in the Pump Couture Fashion Show to give back to a community of strong and passionate people who share her hope for a cure. She is most proud of navigating the medical and insurance systems to get the tools she needs to make managing diabetes easier.
Please show your support by helping Carli reach her fundraising goal to send more kids to D-Camps!
