Maya was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on April 15, 2015. Although other family members have type 1 diabetes, her parents had a lot to learn about dosing and management. Fortunately, her mom was on maternity leave with her little brother, so she was home to help. Maya loves hanging out with friends and family, playing sports, cheerleading, and volleyball.
One of the challenges Maya faces is seeing others eat whatever they want without needing insulin. She also has dyslexia and dysgraphia, and she wants people to know that diabetes isn’t caused by eating too much sugar. She needs to take insulin for every gram of carbs she eats.
Maya wants others to know that everything will be alright, and it’s important to eat protein, drink lots of water, and rely on guardians for support. She is determined to help other Type 1 diabetes kids go to camp.
Maya has attended D-Camp twice and Family D-Camp. She has made many great friends who understand her and her diabetes, and they can relate to each other. Each time she attends, she learns something new and becomes more independent.
Maya is proud of the presentation she gave to 36 educational assistants at her school about diabetes, which lasted over two hours. She dreams of becoming a singer or actor and would love to visit New York.
Maya is modeling in the Pump Couture Fashion Show to raise awareness and funds for D-Camps. She hopes her story will inspire others and help send more kids to D-Camps.
Please show your support by helping Maya reach her fundraising goal to send more kids to D-Camps!
