Debbie was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 18 years ago during university. Initially, she thought managing diabetes would be easy with just medication, but she quickly realized it’s a 24/7 commitment with no days off. New habits and routines became her top priority. Debbie enjoys being a sports fan and watching her daughter play hockey. She also loves spending time with her family on the beautiful Prince Edward Island.
Managing diabetes means making many decisions throughout the day to stay healthy. It’s constant work and can be very challenging at times. Debbie emphasizes that she never did anything to get diabetes, and it’s not a joke. She wears her diabetes as a badge of honor, and other persons with diabetes often acknowledge it with supportive gestures like a high five or a smile.
Debbie finds it frustrating when people share misunderstood information about diabetes. She wants others to know they are not alone and to accept love and support with open arms, as it can be lonely and hard to get through on your own. For the first time, Debbie is taking the time to help fundraise and become part of the diabetes community, aiming to raise awareness and end the stigma.
Debbie’s biggest success is having her daughter and a husband who support and love her with her diabetes. She is modeling in the Pump Couture Fashion Show to raise awareness and funds for D-Camps. She hopes her story will inspire others and help send more kids to D-Camps.
Please show your support by helping Debbie reach her fundraising goal to send more kids to D-Camps!
