Diagnosed with Diabetes in 1982, Kristine was in university at the time. If she knew then what she knows now, her struggles may have been less stressful.
The challenges Kristine faces while living with diabetes are lack of flexibility in activities, the constant ups and downs, and no escape from the disease. She has been very fortunate to not have serious side effects to date, but is more susceptible to illness and fatigue, combined with other less noticeable side effects.
One thing many people don’t realize is Kristine is very determined to get things done, or in other words, stubborn. Kristine wants people to understand constant vigilance is required. At times you must be a scientist to calculate all variables including, but not limited to, carbs, insulin intake and exercise. Diabetes is relentless and difficult to deal with. Hands on deck every day!
Wearing diabetes devices (pump, CGM’s) have affected Kristine’s life positively as blood sugar levels are more regulated and predictable. She is very thankful for her diabetes devices but doesn't particularly like having something attached to her. The biggest challenge of wearing devices is swimming, showering, getting the tubing caught on something, and having it come off.
Kristine’s advice to those newly diagnosed is that there are numerous support groups, online resources, programs and caring people to support you. We are fortunate to have significant and ongoing advances in technology and medicine. You aren't alone, and do not hesitate to reach out and ask for help.
Kristine is modeling in Pump Couture because she wants to give back and to make people more aware of what having diabetes is like. She never went to children's camps, as Kristine was 22 when diagnosed. She has heard and can imagine the positive outcomes for kids, realizing they aren't alone on this journey.
Kristine loves to spend time with her grandchildren, bike, exercise, and be creative through arts, and crafts.
Please show your support by helping Kristine reach her fundraising goal to send more kids to D-Camps!
