Amelia was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 3. It all started one day when she wet the bed and peed over 21 times in 24 hours, constantly asking for more water. Her family tossed around ideas of what could be wrong, thinking it might be a UTI. However, her mom had a feeling something deeper was wrong.
Amelia’s diagnosis brought a huge learning curve for the family. They had to change their entire lives, learning to count carbs, check blood sugars around the clock, and ensure Amelia ate a balanced diet.
Amelia loves hanging out with her family and friends, doing ballet, gymnastics, soccer, and swimming. The biggest challenge has been explaining to her why she is different from everyone else, her mom worries that Amelia sometimes feels isolated.
"Having diabetes does not mean you can't do normal things like play sports or eat fun foods," her mom says.
"It gets better, easier, and you are not alone," her mom advises. "There is a massive community out there to help and support you every step of the way. This won't limit you. You can live a great life with the help of a few medical interventions."
Amelia's mom wants her daughter to feel like she’s not alone and she wants to build awareness and become part of the community to fundraise, which is extremely important to her family.
Amelia's biggest success is her bravery. She is smart, constantly learning about her condition, and very independent.
Amelia dreams of becoming a doctor. She absolutely loves Palm Springs, especially the palm trees.
