Lisa and her daughter Megan were both diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 20 years ago, just two days apart. While it's not rare for multiple family members to share the same diagnosis, it's highly unusual for a mother and daughter to develop diabetes at the same time. This unique situation was highly stressful but also a blessing, as they had each other to lean on over the years.
Lisa loves to travel, spend time with her family, work out, and tend to her collection of plants. The day-to-day, 24/7 management of type 1 diabetes is challenging, especially when caring for a child with diabetes at the same time. Lisa went years with very little sleep because if it wasn’t her blood sugars keeping her awake, it was Megan's.
Lisa enjoys learning languages and is currently working on Mandarin and Spanish. She often says that if diabetes were just about food and insulin, it would be easy. However, many other factors affect blood sugar, including mental health, activity levels, illness, and hormones. It's not easy and can take a toll.
Lisa advises reaching out to others on the same journey. "We thrive in community with each other. It helps to know that you are not alone and to have others to share your struggles and victories with."
Lisa wants to help support kids attending diabetes camp and raise awareness about living well with diabetes. While she hasn't attended camp herself, Megan has, and Lisa has witnessed the increase in her confidence and the lifelong friendships she has made.
Lisa is proud to have completed several 5k races, two of which were fundraisers for Team Diabetes. Although she can't run anymore, she still leads an active lifestyle.
