Jamie has been living with diabetes since he was three years old. It wasn’t until he attended D-Camps at the age of nine that he really began learning how to manage the ups and downs of diabetes on his own. Jamie was an energetic kid who enjoyed all water sports, organized hockey, soccer, and football, and competed provincially in freestyle skiing and team rowing. Being so physically active, diabetes presented its challenges.
Camp provided Jamie with an engaging and actively diverse environment where diabetes felt normal and understood by everyone. He was surrounded by other kids, counsellors, activity leads and medical staff that all had diabetes. While immersed in activities such as canoeing, swimming, tripping, mountain biking and outdoor survival skills. Jamie was able to develop the skills he needed to take care of his diabetes within a safe and fun environment. The self-management skills he learned while participating in these activities transferred into his everyday life, empowering Jamie to push himself, take risks and live his life with confidence.
Before Pump, Jamie and his friend actively fundraised to help send kids to camp, with coast-to-coast lemonade stands, raising over $400,000 in five years. Today, Jamie is modelling in the Pump Couture Fashion Show to raise awareness about the challenges of growing up with diabetes and to be a part of an event helping more kids have the opportunity to experience camp, and to develop the sense of community and confidence he did.
Show your support by helping Jamie reach his fundraising goal and support sending more kids to D-Camps!
