Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of three, Ben's parents were deeply shaken. In his early years, Ben was constantly fighting off nurses, hating every injection! By age five, Ben reached an incredible milestone by becoming one of the first insulin pumpers in Nova Scotia. Wearing an pump helped Ben and his family better manage his diabetes, no longer fighting off medical staff and giving his parents comfort that his blood glucose levels were controlled.
Living and growing with diabetes brought its own set of challenges, including a negative stigma and managing high blood sugar levels. Despite this, Ben has achieved significant milestones, notably as an award-winning filmmaker and founder of a clothing brand in Pictou, NS.
As a former D-Camper, he has always said that he has a love/hate relationship with camp. At first, when Ben started attending, he had a lot of separation anxiety from his family, even though the doctors and nurses were amazing, his diabetes meant that growing up, his parents always had to be there to support. As Ben got older though, he started to gain independence in his diabetes management, providing him with some of the skills that have made him the person he is today.
“I grew to love it and crated some lifelong friends from camp for sure, once you get older you realize how small Nova Scotia is and you start running into camp friends everywhere!”
Ben is proud to be modelling in the Pump Couture Fashion Show, as a creative person who has his own clothing brand, he thinks this is an amazing opportunity to share his story while also bringing awareness to some of the stigma that surrounds diabetes.
Please show your support by helping Ben reach his fundraising goal so that more kids like him can learn independence and lifelong diabetes management skills at D-Camps.
