Ciara was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was 11 years old. She is now a certified diabetes educator helping others living with diabetes. Ciara hopes to spread awareness that living with diabetes is an individualized experience and she wants to help diminish the shame, stigma and blame that exists surrounding diabetes. She also hopes that showcasing the devices will help to advocate for improved sensor technology and insulin pumps for all in Nova Scotia.
Ciara attended D-Camps for the first time 20 years ago. She went as a shy 13-year-old and left as the 'Rookie of the Week.'
“D-Camps gave me confidence not only in my diabetes self-management but also in the fact that I would achieve so much in life—and that my diabetes could simply be 'along for the ride.'”
One of the challenges of living with diabetes that Ciara faced was the preconceived notions about her physical capabilities. She wasn't initially approved for the "outdoor pursuits" class in her high school due to fears surrounding her type 1 diabetes diagnosis. That didn’t dissuade Ciara who recently cycled the Cabot Trail and completed her first sprint triathlon last summer.
Please show your support by helping Ciara reach her fundraising goal and support sending more kids to D-Camps!
