October 10th will mark the 23rd year for our annual Matthew & Cameron Flynn and Friends Walk for Diabetes Research. We are so thankful to our family, friends and community who continue to support our efforts on behalf of Diabetes Canada.
Our family decided to help raise awareness and funds for diabetes research shortly after our son Matt's diagnosis in 1997. In our first year, we hoped to raise $200-$300 and ended up raising $2,000. To date, our walk has raised over $150,000.
It has been 23 years since Matt was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and 16 years since our youngest son Cameron was diagnosed with type 1 as well. While family life with two children living with diabetes can be challenging and hectic, we are very fortunate that Matt and Cameron are healthy and that we have incredible family support. Matt and Cameron have done an amazing job with their diabetes management and we applaud their commitment to do their best to live healthy & active lives.
While this year's event will look a little bit different due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we did not want to postpone or cancel a tradition that has become so important to us. We have been dedicated to this cause and believe we can continue with our fundraising efforts in a safe manner. We are looking forward to our upcoming family weekend but also a weekend to raise funds for diabetes research.
You can make a difference in the lives of more than 9 million people living with diabetes or prediabetes. By making a donation to our event, you are supporting Diabetes Canada in Newfoundland & Labrador in its mission to help people with diabetes and those at risk of diabetes lead healthier lives while working to find a cure.
Sincerely,
The Flynn & Hiscock Families
