Every 3 minutes, a person in Canada is diagnosed with diabetes. On May 27'24, that person was my 11 year old son, the Doctor came in the room and said, "Your son has type 1 diabetes."
Since then, our new normal has included carb counting (every snack and meal). Adapting carb to insulin ratios at meals/snacks. My son becoming a master at giving himself needles.
Changing continious glucose monitors (dexcom G7) every 10 days...an important device that tells us what his blood sugars are every 5 mins, alarms when he is low...or too high. Technology that I'm thankful for, as I can 'follow' with my phone. Technology that also wakes me in the middle of the night to notify me he's low.
Something I never anticipated was needing to anticipate everything! (Yes, I realize this is impossible.) But to 'manage' diabetes, one should check their sugars prior to activity, have a snack if low. Carry low treatments (ex., dextrose tabs/rockets, juice) at all times, have emergency treatment on them at all times. The other weekend, my son forgot to do this when going for a walk at his grampas acreage. He had to be carried back because he couldn't walk. Thankfully, he wasn't far, and we had sugar available...but its instances like that that are scary.
Tech is great, and helps people with diabetes manage their disease more effectively, but what is truly needed is a cure. Maybe I'll even live to see it!
I'm Lacing Up to help bring us one step closer to a cure. Please help me make a lasting difference by donating to my page.
Every dollar raised helps fund education, support services, advocacy and diabetes research that could lead to the next big medical breakthrough.
