Matt & Cameron Flynn & Friends Walk for Diabetes

Hi everyone! My name is Matt and I'm 24 years old. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes the day after my 1st birthday, and my younger brother Cameron was diagnosed 10 days before his 2nd birthday. Needless to say, diabetes has been a very large part of my family's lives for the last 23 years.

After my diagnosis, my parents and grandparents organized a walkathon to help raise money for diabetes research and awareness of the disease. In 1998 - when I was 2 - they raised $2,000 in the first annual Matthew and Cameron Flynn & Friends Walk for Diabetes Research. Little did they know that this event would continue to grow and continue 23 years later! To date, my family's efforts have raised over $160,000 in support of Diabetes Canada.

This year we have decided to roll our walkathon into the Lace Up campaign and be a part of something even bigger. This is a milestone year for the diabetes community, as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the discovery of insulin, so what better time to join forces with volunteers and participants across the country to raise funds and awareness while staying active!

We have seen such a dramatic improvement in the ability to manage and treat diabetes over the last 100 years. That being said, there's still lots of work to be done. We can't wait another 100 years to end diabetes. People living with this disease deserve to live with a high quality of life with as little added stress as possible. So with that in mind, I hope you will join me in saying #LetsEndDiabetes
