About John Bowles

Diabetes Canada invites you to be part of the 6th annual John Bowles Memorial Golf Tournament presented by Hecla Mining Company on August 11th, 2022. This event is held in memory of John Bowles. A former Hecla Board Member John was active in the Mining Suppliers Association and was awarded a Fellowship in the Canadian Institute of Mining in 2003 and was named the Mining Person of the Year by the BC Mining Association in 2006. In addition to this work, John was a dedicated volunteer, fundraiser and advocate for Diabetes Canada, first serving as local treasurer and eventually becoming the National President from 1982-84, for which he was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2013.  To honour John’s memory and the impact he had on the mining community, Hecla is the title sponsor of this tournament. Over the past 5 years, the tournament has raised more than $475,000 to help end diabetes.

Golf Tournament Information

This summer’s tournament will be held at University Golf Club, located minutes from downtown Vancouver. This traditional west coast course features majestic, towering old-growth trees and long narrow fairways that anyone can play 18 holes of golf on.

Covid-19 Prevention Details

Due to the continued unpredictability of Covid-19 we have put the following precautions in place to increase the health and safety of all our players.


  • Tee time intervals every 10-minutes starting at 11:30 am(Tee times will be assigned prior to the tournament, please arrive 15 min prior to your tee time for registration)
  • Contactless lunches provided
  • 2 power carts per group (with the same bubble)
  • Hand sanitizer, face masks and antibacterial wipes will be supplied to all participants
  • Private reception with indoor and outdoor areas

Get Involved

Your Support is needed to make this event a success and help end diabetes. Today, almost 1.6 million British Columbians, are living with diabetes or prediabetes. People with diabetes are over 3 times more likely to be hospitalized with cardiovascular disease and it can reduce lifespan by 5 to 15 years. Funds raised at this event will support lifesaving research, diabetes management and prevention programs in the province.
